Augmented reality simulator for indirect binocular ophthalmoscopy

High fidelity simulator

Lifelike training environment

With a patient model head, two lenses, and a head mounted stereo display, the Eyesi Indirect simulator mimics all features of a real binocular indirect ophthalmoscope. When trainees put on the ophthalmoscope hat, they see a 3D simulation of a patient. To examine the patient’s retina, the lens must be positioned correctly in front of the patient model head. The corresponding visualization of the eye is dynamically rendered in real time.

Standardized curriculum

Step-by-step to expert performance

Eyesi Indirect comes with a didactically structured curriculum. First, trainees hone their skills in ophthalmoscope handling and fundus documentation by means of abstract cases. For training of diagnostic abilities, Eyesi Indirect offers a range of characteristic clinical cases, which have been modeled in close cooperation with university eye clinics. The clinical cases come with detailed patient histories, multiple-choice questions, and additional diagnostic material.

Self-guided training

Procedural guidance & medical background information

The Eyesi Indirect curriculum has been designed for self-guided training. Guidance elements and medical background information support trainees in their learning process. Trainees advance through the curriculum independently by successfully completing the cases within a course. Required minimum scores ensure that trainees meet a defined skill level.

Assessment

Feedback & evaluation

Eyesi Indirect provides both trainees and educators with an objective performance assessment. Immediate feedback after each case helps trainees to improve their skills systematically. Scored parameters include, for example, percentage of retina examined, light exposure, completeness of pathological signs found, and the accuracy of the diagnosis.

Online administration of users and classes

VRmNet for educators

VRmNet is a web service for networked simulators from Haag-Streit Simulation. Educators can use VRmNet to easily set up users and classes. Trainees then receive a welcome email with their login information. After logging in to their personal dashboard, they have access to an orientation course to help them get started with their simulator training. Configurable notifications keep educators informed on their students’ progress.

Studies

Validated training methods

Numerous studies have validated the training concepts of training simulators by Haag-Streit Simulation and have proven that beginners, residents, and experienced doctors benefit from simulator training.
